The People’s Theatre – A good candidate for an Arts & Heritage centre

Uncategorized

by Alan Rutherford

In the centre of the ancient town, there is The People’s Theatre. It has a very special history, that was brought to light during a field work trip and you can read our report ‘The Trip Recording of Ancient Chongwu City‘ and learn about the building.

Thinking about the town and it’s rich history led me to think that it should be celebrated and shared more with both local residents and visitors to the walled town. There are a lot of artefacts of historical importance located throughout the town and these could be used to form a small collection. In turn, this collection could be put on display in the People’s Theatre. A small space could be set aside as a starting point. It would also be possible to display the work of local and visiting artists. Furthermore, the space could also function as an outreach location to show the work of organisations such as the Ruan Yisan Heritage Foundation.

To generate interest and highlight the Theatre as a focal point for the arts, it would be possible to ‘wrap’ art around the 4 columns at the front of the building. The process could be started as an output of this project that the artists have been working on. The report outlines this proposal and can be read here:
