About Us
Visual artists from Scotland and China will work together in partnership with the Ruan Yisan Heritage Foundation (RYH) to collaborate through its ‘Arts and Heritage’ project, that invites artists to work at ancient and historic town sites in Fujian province. Initial project funding has been received through the British Council’s ‘Connections through Culture’ programme.
Artists Alan Rutherford (Scotland), Hui Zhang (China) and Xiaoyu Xiong (China) came together by participating in the ‘Digital Connections through Culture Pilot Scotland – China’ (November 2020 – February 2021) and will explore cultural heritage with the aim to make and install art works that can bring the heritage and tradition of a site to new audiences. The project also aims to engage with the local public through the art works and to push the conversation and contribute to the local heritage. A series of ‘interventions’ will be installed in the towns, that can function as new readings of the towns heritage and connections.
‘Our foundation is so glad to be the Chinese partner of this project and do look forward to the artists’ creative work for each heritage site. Personally, I am so exciting to join this team, cooperating with Alan, Xiaoyu and Hui’ – DingFeng, General Secretary, RYHThe project of Art&Heritage presents an exciting opportunity to make a collaboration between Chinese and Scottish artists and to share creative methods and artistic concepts, working alongside the RYH to create art works in the Fujian province of China. This affords the opportunity traditional craft cultures, and to create focused works of art. China is rapidly becoming a major influence in scenes emerging over the last 20 years.
